With residential development earmarked in and around Market Square, the space has an important part to play, offering high quality, open spaces for the town centres future residents, visitors and those who work in Harlow Town Centre.

In late 2023, additional funding was secured from Government to incorporate Market Square as part of the regeneration of Broad Walk, allowing whole-place regeneration of the public spaces within the 'retail core'.

The proposals for Market Square take elements of design from the East Gate pilot project (delivered during 2021 and 2022) and the proposals for Broad Walk. This approach means that all the open, public space across Harlow Town Centre will be consistent, providing better connectivity and navigation for residents and shoppers.

The proposals for Market Square include significant greening, create tactile engaging spaces; offering spaces for tenants in the neighbouring commercial units to spill out; all whilst maintaining flexible spaces for market-style trading and, a range of events and activities that complement the wider town centre offer.
